Dating back to the middle of 20th century, environmental engineering was featured with prevention of local pollution and end-of-pipe treatment. With the increase of severe environmental pollution problems and a wider range of according influence, the area of environmental engineering study is expanding. In the late 20th century, the trends of science and technology development are integration, polarization and ecologicalization. This was inevitable requirement and important reflection of moving towards sustainable development from social economy, and towards green civilization from industrial civilization, which also reflects the integration, interinfiltration, and development of environmental engineering and other subjects. In this new century, as the core and source of development of environmental protection technologies, environmental engineering plays an important role in the promotion of the development of “green technology and green industry”, and facilitating the transition from industrial civilization to green civilization. As one of the future leading subjects in the 21th century, it will benefit the implementation of basic state policy of environmental protection, the rejuvenating strategies for sustainable development of society, economy and environment.

Environmental Engineering is a grade-2 subject in Environmental Science and Engineering. It is a novel, intergrated and interdisciplinary subject of natural science, social science and engineering technological and focus both on the protection and improvement of environment and society developmen. Its primary mission is to study the professional theories, technical principles and engineering processes of environmental protection and improvement.

Students majoring in Environmental engineering will acquire the frontier of environmental science development, the basic technical theories and practical skills in environmental engineering in order to possess the ability to work on environmental monitoring, planning and management; water, air, solid waste and noise pollution control in cities and plants, and water resources reservation, water supply and sewerage engineering. The program provides advanced technological and management personnel for the department of environmental protection management and environmental monitoring, the relevant research institutions and design organizations, and the professional engineering companies.
