DisciplineEnvironmental Science and Engineering

(Discipline Code: 0830)

Brief Introduction of Discipline

The discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering in Southeast University has a long history of more than 70 years. It dates back to early 1940s, the foundation of Sanitary Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering in the National Central University (the predecessor of Southeast University). Our university was also one of the first five colleges affiliated with the State Education Commission in which the discipline of environmental engineering was established in the late 1970s. We have 18 professors (11 doctoral supervisors) and 22 associate professors. Two faculties were selected as “TransCentury Training Program Foundation for the Talents” by the Ministry of Education of China. More than half of the faculties have oversea research experiences. Supported by 985 Projects, the discipline has a Key Laboratory of Environmental Medicine, Ministry of Education of China, and Laboratory Center of Environmental Science and Engineering. Over the past decades, we have undertaken a number of 863 Program (National High Technology Research and Development Program) projects, 973 Program projects (Major Project of Chinese National Programs for Fundamental Research and Development), national key scientific and technological projects and other scientific research projects at the provincial or ministerial level. Our discipline is in a leading position at home in the aspect of lake eutrophication control, algal toxins and so on. We have made international cooperation and research actively over the years and have established long-term cooperation relationship with Pennsylvania State University (USA), National Institute of Environmental Studies (Japan), University of British Columbia (Canada) as well as other academic and scientific research institutes abroad.

Research Direction

1. Water pollution control, theory and technology of water treatment

2. Air pollution control and waste gas purification

3. Theory and technology of solid waste treatment, disposal and recycle

4. Lake eutrophication control and ecological water treatment

5. Technology on the purification of drinking water with slight pollution

6. Migration mechanism and control technique for gaseous pollutants in the coal-conversion process and tail gas

Training Objectives

The students will build a solid, broad, and theoretical foundation, have systematic and in-depth expertise in Environmental Science and Engineering, and have the ability of conducting scientific research and solving the technical problems independently. They will be competent for teaching and scientific research, technical innovation and equipment development, and engineering management. The graduated students will be proficient in at least one foreign language.

Training Period

Generally, the students are expected to graduate in 3 or 4 years, longest may delay for 6 years.

Credit Requirements and Curriculum (see attached list)

Confirmation Report

The confirmation report was required to be complete within the fourth semester and get approved by 5 related experts. Students can apply for the thesis defense at least one year after the confirmation.

Mid-term Assessment

The mid-term assessment is held in the fourth semester. According to the gained credits and confirmation report, the mid-term assessment needs to be scored abide by relevant provisions of graduate school.

Dissertation

Literature reading requirements, thesis written request, publication achievement requirements etc.

Literature Reading (for reference only, the same below)

Students are required to read at least 60 literatures on topics related to their dissertation and research direction including 30 literatures in foreign languages and to write a literature overview.

Dissertation Writing

In addition to compliance with the provisions of school, dissertation must be written in a systematic and complete manner, presenting clear concepts, correct argument, realistic description, concise writing structure, smooth and concise writing style, correct calculation, reliable data, and clear icons.

Dissertation Evaluation

The dissertation should have certain depth and breadth. The following requirements should be achieved: have obvious innovation, reach the international advanced level in some part of the content, and have certain coverage. The findings presented in the dissertation should show the recent discovery, the new opinion, and certain guiding sense to this discipline's academic development. Students are required to conduct at least 2 years research and to publish at least 3 papers in journals included in the List of Important Journal for Academic Degree and Graduate Education of Southeast University before being eligible for applying for a doctor's degree. Students should publish at least 3 papers as the first author, or 2 papers as the first author plus another as the second author. At least one of the papers be either indexed by SCI or published in an indexed journal with an impact factor over 2.0. The first affiliation of the academic paper must be Southeast University.
