The application background and ultimate goal of the discipline Power engineering & engineering thermophysics is clean and highly efficient exploitation, manufacture, conversion and utilization of energy. It is not only a fundamental engineering subject but also an applied science, which researches on the basic laws of energy conversion and transformation in the process of energy conversion and reciprocal conversion between the energy in forms of heat, light, potential energy or kinetic energy and energy in forms of power or electric energy. The theory and technology of the design, manufacture and operation of the equipment and system that work under these laws are established. This discipline is the theoretical foundation of energy and power engineering. The discipline includes 8 following research directions

 

1. Engineering thermophysics

Engineering thermophysics is the basic subject in the area of energy utilization, which includes heat energy gasdynamics, hydrodynamics, heat and mass transfer, new type of continuous supply and utilization of sustainable energy, and system analysis.

 

2. Thermal engineering

Thermal engineering is an applied science that researches on the proper conversion and utilization of energy with high efficiency and no pollution. By focusing on thermal process and equipment, it researches the principle and technology of energy transforming that transforms first from chemical energy to heat and them from heat to work. New theory, technology, crafts, equipment and materials are developed in energy utilization. This direction establishes the foundation of science theory and engineering technology.

 

3. Power machinery and engineering

Thermal turbine, internal combustion engine and other new type of power machinery and system is the object of this direction. It studies the basic theory and key technology of safe, highly efficient and clean energy transformation from energy in all forms into mechanical energy. The direction involves many areas that are related with national economy, social development and national defense industry, such as energy, traffic, electricity, space, agriculture, and environment.

 

4. Fluid machinery and engineering

The direction of fluid machinery and engineering is focus on the conversion law in all kinds of fluid mechanical devices and internal fluid mechanics. The typical research objects include the compressor, the air blower, the fan and the pump. These fluid flow machines consume about 30-40% electricity of all industrial electricity. It is obvious that the direction is very important in national economy and social life. The goal of this direction is the energy conservation and localization. The development of advanced propulsion system and the development and utilization of new energy are also concerned.

 

5. Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering

The research of this direction is based on basic principles in the process of energy transferring and transforming from low temperature to high temperature in the reverse cycle. The direction mainly researches on the principle and method of obtaining and maintaining of low temperature, the required devices and equipment, and engineering applications in cryogenic conditions. The technology of this direction is widely applied in many areas such as mechanical, metallurgy, petroleum, chemical industry, food storage, artificial environment, biomedical, cryogenic superconductor, space technology and so on. It is extremely important in civil refrigeration, commercial refrigeration, industrial refrigeration, biomass quick-freezing and preservation, liquefaction of gas and super conduction.

 

6. Chemical process machinery

The research object is the continuous and complex system combining machinery, process and control. This direction mainly focuses on the key technology in highly efficient, energy saving, safe and clean complete equipment that are badly needed by process industry. It is an intersectional subject that combines machinery with chemical industry, control, information, material and mechanics.

 

7. Energy and environment engineering

The purpose of this direction is to resolve the environmental problems in the mining, conversion and utilization of all kinds of energy. It studies the development of new energy saving and environmental friendly technology, equipment and materials to realize the clean producing and utilization of energy and reduce or eliminate the related environmental problems. It lays the foundation in theory and engineering technology for environmental friendly utilization of energy.

 

8. New energy science and engineering

The object of this direction includes solar energy, geothermal energy, wind energy, biomass energy, hydraulic energy, marine energy and other renewable energy. It studies the basic theory and key technology of the energy conversion and utilization with high efficiency and low cost. It is a new direction that aims new industrial research and multidisciplinary field involves energy, material, chemistry, physics and biology.
