Program for Ph.D in Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics

DisciplinePower Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics

(Discipline Code:  0807)

Brief Introduction of Discipline

Southeast University is the cradle of the discipline of power engineering & engineering thermophysics in China. This discipline was founded in the National Centre University (predecessor of Southeast University) by four prominent scholars including Prof. Fan Congzheng (the founder of Chinese boiler discipline), Prof. Wang Shoutai (the founder of Chinese turbine discipline), Prof. Xia Yanru (the founder of Chinese thermal engineering discipline) and Prof. Qian Zhonghan (the founder of Chinese thermal control discipline). In the past decades, more than 10 thousands of senior talents with high-quality professional skills in thermal power engineering, including 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) have been cultivated in this discipline. The discipline is listed in the dominant disciplines in Jiangsu province, and is supported by the “985 Program” and "211 Project" key discipline constructing program of Southeast University. Seven sub-disciplines, including Thermal Engineering”, “Engineering thermophysics”, “Power Machinery and Engineering”, “Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering”, “Fluid Machinery and Engineering”, “Chemical Process Machinery” and “Energy Environment Engineering”, are included in this discipline. Among these sub-disciplines, “Thermal Engineering” is a national key discipline, and “Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering” is a provincial key discipline. There are 66 full time faculty members in this discipline, 36 of them are professors (27 PhD supervisors). They also include one academician of CAE, one training object of “National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent” Project, two leading talents in the 333 mid-aged leading talents in science and technology of Jiangsu province, one person was selected as “Trans-Century Excellent Talents” and 6 selected as “New Century Excellent Talents” by the Ministry of Education. In the last five years, we were awarded once the second prize of national award for progress in scientific and technology, and two times the first prize of provincial award for progress prize in scientific and technology. There are also several research institutions built, such as a national engineering research center of vibration of large power unit, a key lab of energy conversion and process control, Ministry of Education, and a provincial research center of pollution control and recycling engineering.

2. Combustion and pollution control technology

3. Thermal engineering measurement and automatic control

4. Simulation, optimization and diagnosis of thermodynamic system

5. Vibration analysis and application of power machinery

6. Refrigeration and air conditioning technology

7. Renewable energy technology

Training Objectives

The students will grasp basic theory and professional ability on Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics. The students will have systematic and thorough expertise, become specialized in experimental techniques used in his/her research areas, and be capable of conducting independent research in scientific fields. The graduated students will be proficient in one kind of foreign languages.

Training Period

Generally, the students are expected to graduate in 3 or 4 years, longest may delay for 6 years.

Credit Requirements and Curriculum (see attached list)

Confirmation Report

The confirmation report should be finished before the end of the fourth semester and get approved by 5 related experts. Students can apply for the thesis defense at least one year after the confirmation.

Mid-term Assessment

The mid-term assessment is held in the fourth semester. According to the gained credits and confirmation report, the mid-term assessment needs to be scored abide by relevant provisions of graduate school.

Dissertation

Literature reading requirements, thesis written request, publication achievement requirements etc.

Literature Reading

Students are required to read at least 50 literatures on topics related to their dissertation and research direction including 30 literatures in foreign languages and to write a literature overview.

Dissertation Writing

In addition to compliance with the provisions of school, dissertation must be written in a systematic and complete manner, presenting clear concepts, correct argument, realistic description, concise writing structure, smooth and concise writing style, correct calculation, reliable data, and clear icons.

Dissertation Evaluation

The dissertation should have certain depth and breadth. The following requirements should be achieved: have obvious innovation, reach the international advanced level in some part of the content, and have certain coverage. The findings presented in the dissertation should show the recent discovery, the new opinion, and certain guiding sense to this discipline's academic development. Students are required to conduct at least 2 years research and to publish at least 3 papers in journals included in the List of Important Journal for Academic Degree and Graduate Education of Southeast University before being eligible for applying for a doctor's degree. Students should publish at least 3 papers as the first author, or publish 2 papers as the first author plus another as the second author following his/her supervisor. At least one of the papers be either indexed by SCI or published in an indexed journal with an impact factor over 2.0. The first affiliation of the academic paper must be Southeast University.
