This direction studying for pollutants from coal-fired power plants, industrial kilns and other typical pollutants: SOx, NOx and CO2, inhalable particles and heavy metal (mercury Hg, lead, Pb, cadmium Cd, arsenic As etc) and other pollutants, studying its formation mechanism, migrate attribute, controlling and removal rule, developing advanced emission control methods and techniques, achieving the effective control of the above pollutants and low cost to remove to provide theory, method and technology for improving the quality of the environment.

Our institution has already obtained some important research achievements. Such as:

●Desulphurization of coal-fired flue gas

Researched and developed a U-type advection absorption tower flue gas desulfurization process, the process is authenticated as a new technology of originality by expert. Compared with similar foreign technology, the running cost is reduced by 25%, the fixed investment is reduced by 40%, and the floor space is reduced by 40%. This process with its unique advantages is successfully used in has been successfully used in large power plants ranges from 135 MW to 600 MW, it won the second prize in the ministry of education technology innovation, 2009, and one of the main content of the second prize (the key technology of dense multiphase flow with chemical reaction coupling system and application of energy saving and emission reduction) in the national scientific and technological progress, 2010. In addition, it has made remarkable achievement and progressed quickly in the large-scale industrialization and application of boiler exhaust gas circulating fluidized bed desulfurization technology (CFB FGD), this technology is first successfully used in a 130 ton/hour utility boiler of Shandong Yantai power plant, after the desulphurization efficiency has reached 90%, it has been applied in the boiler of Yunnan Xiaolongwan power plant 100MW generator sets, Shandong power plant 150MW generator sets and Shanxi Datong second power plant and Inner Mongolia Wuhai power plant 200MW generator sets, more systems are in the phase of construction and commissioning.

● Denitration of coal-fired flue gas

With the support of national high technology research projects (863 Program) key project and special project and the cooperation of collaborative organizations, the laboratory research results about the Honeycomb shaped SCR denitration catalyst has been conducted industrial development timely, and achieved batch production of SCR denitration catalyst. Currently, the cooperative enterprise has won 12 bids for 300000 KW to 600000 KW generator sets, including 4 sets in Jiangsu south thermal power generation co., LTD which have been put into operation, the average rate of denitration reached 80%, and the ammonia leakage amount is less than 2 ppm. In addition, the new desulfurization denitration technology is developed (such as biological method), and a variety of pollutants collaborative removal research is carried out, related technology researches have gotten the support from 3 National 863 Programs respectively, which provide guarantee for the smooth development of the project.

● Removal of inhalable particulate

With the support of national 973 Program and Natural Science Foundation of China, using the method of numerical calculation, the laboratory forecasted the the particle size distribution of dust in emissions from coal-fired power plant flue gas, analyzed the dust removal efficiency of the existing power plant dust remover, fine particle size distribution and other properties, carried on comprehensive evaluation of the dynamic characteristics of inhalable particulate under external conditions (acoustic, electric, magnetic, etc), and promoted fine particles to "grow up" by using the theory of vapor phase transition, and the corresponding removal process parameters is given, it laid a theoretical foundation for the project.

● Removal of heavy metal pollutants

Research has been conducted on the migration, enrichment and transformation rules of mercury and mercuric in coal-fired flue gas, and analyzed the adsorption mechanism and adsorption efficiency of mercury with coal sorbents in coal-fired flue gas, this research was supported by the national 973 Program, providing certain conditions for further research (reducing the price of adsorbent, improving the adsorptive property).

● Capture and utilization of CO2

Dried chemical adsorption of CO2 from coal-fired power plant flue gas and biomass gasification at low temperature and hydrolytic process has been carried out, using potassium based carbonate and other solid adsorbents to achieve the adsorption of CO2, and studied the process conditions of CO2 desorption, analyzed the energy consumption of the whole process. In the aspect of chemical absorption method, the Southeast University, as one of the CERC technology alliance members, carried on the research of CO2 capture and storage in the international cooperation project, high technology transfer research on coal of China and the United States, and wrote the handbook of “The catcher technology development and the pilot demonstration of CO2 using chemical absorption method” with Nanjing Saint Carnot Heat Pipe Company and University of Kentucky.

Currently the focuses of research are as including follows:

(1) The emissions control of Acid gas from coal-fired flue gas (Biological desulphurization and denitration, new type of flue gas denitration method and catalyst, Collaborative removal of multiple pollutants);

(2) Emission control of inhalable particles and heavy metal pollutants (Emission control of PM2.5, Emission control of heavy metal pollutants, etc);

(3) CO2 capture and utilization (Chemical absorption method to capture CO2, Adsorption method to capture CO2).
